Car Rental Insurance Malaysia — CDW, PAI and What You Really Need

car rental insuranceCDWPAIMalaysia

Insurance is the most misunderstood part of renting a car. Here's a plain-English guide to what's included, what's optional, and what to watch out for.

What's Included in Every Rental?

Every car rented from Suria Car Rental comes with basic third-party insurance — this covers damage or injury to other people and their property in an accident. It's mandatory in Malaysia and is always included in your rental price.

What is CDW and Extra CDW Protection?

Standard CDW is already included in every Suria rental — you do not buy it separately. What it leaves you with is a non-waiverable excess: the maximum you would pay towards repairs if the car is damaged or stolen, however the damage happened.

Extra CDW Protection is optional. It lowers that non-waiverable excess for a daily fee, so the most you could be asked for drops — for example from RM 3,000 to RM 1,500 on a Civic.

Car Group Standard Excess (included) With Extra CDW Protection Extra CDW Cost
A — Axia, Myvi, Bezza RM 1,500 RM 500 RM 20/day
B — Persona, Vios, City, BR-V, Alza, Aruz, Ativa, Rush RM 2,000 RM 750 RM 30/day
C — Altis, Civic, HR-V, CR-V, Camry, Innova, Serena RM 3,000 RM 1,500 RM 40/day
D — Estima, Vellfire, Alphard RM 4,000 RM 2,500 RM 45/day
E — Mercedes C200, Hilux, Hiace, Staria RM 6,000 RM 3,500 RM 50/day

Our recommendation: Extra CDW Protection is worth it for peace of mind, especially if you're driving on unfamiliar roads.

What is PAI (Personal Accident Insurance)?

PAI provides a lump-sum payout to you or your family in the event of accidental death or permanent disability during the rental period. It typically covers the driver and passengers.

At Suria, PAI is available as an optional add-on at RM 10/day.

Do I Need Both?

  • CDW only: Protects the car — recommended for most renters
  • PAI only: Protects you personally — good if you have no travel insurance
  • Both: Maximum peace of mind for long trips or unfamiliar routes

If you already have comprehensive travel insurance that covers rental cars, you may be able to skip both — check your policy before you book.

What's NOT Covered

Regardless of CDW or PAI, the following are usually excluded:

  • Damage caused by driving under the influence
  • Damage to tyres, wheels, or underbody (unless caused by a collision)
  • Theft of personal belongings from the car
  • Driving outside permitted areas

Add CDW and PAI easily when you book your car online. No hidden charges — the price you see is the price you pay.
